Overview of the Position
Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action are seeking a senior communications professional with a deep understanding of politics, media relations, public affairs, and strategic messaging.
This is not a traditional writing or editing position. The C3 & C4 Online Editor & Press Specialist serves as a key member of the Media & Policy team, helping shape organizational narratives, identify media opportunities, respond to breaking political developments, and advance the public affairs objectives of both Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action.
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled writer and editor with strong political instincts who closely follows legislative developments, elections, cultural debates, and media trends. This individual should be capable of advising on messaging strategy, identifying emerging opportunities and risks, and translating complex political issues into compelling communications for media, supporters, policymakers, and the public.
Responsibilities
Writing & Content Development
- Write and edit press releases, articles, statements, op-eds, talking points, media advisories, and other public-facing content.
- Ensure content is accurate, strategically sound, and aligned with SFLA/SFLAction messaging and style standards.
- Develop rapid-response content for breaking news, legislative developments, and political issues.
- Maintain and update content on C3 and C4 websites and press pages.
Media Relations
- Build and maintain relationships with reporters, producers, podcasters, and new media outlets.
- Pitch stories, coordinate interviews, and respond to media inquiries.
- Assist in preparing staff, students, and organizational leaders for media opportunities.
- Identify and cultivate media opportunities that advance organizational priorities.
Political & Strategic Communications
- Monitor state and federal legislative activity, elections, policy developments, and breaking news.
- Work closely with Students for Life Action to communicate political initiatives, legislative efforts, and advocacy campaigns.
- Participate in strategic communications planning and help shape organizational messaging.
- Provide research, analysis, and communications recommendations on emerging issues.
- Serve as a strategic writing and editing resource for Students for Life Action, producing and refining a wide range of political, policy, advocacy, and organizational communications beyond traditional media products.
Qualifications: 1-5 years’ experience preferred
- 5+ years of experience in media relations, journalism, political communications, public affairs, or a related field.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Strong understanding of politics, public policy, media relations, and message development.
- Experience drafting press releases, op-eds, statements, and other media-facing content.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, breaking-news environment.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience with media databases, project management systems, and website content management preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, Public Relations, or related field preferred.
Position Details
Position Type
- This is a full-time salaried position working at least 40 hours per week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, with some weekends on call.
- After-hour emergencies may occur with schedules to reflect unexpected workflow.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This role will report to the Vice President for Media & Policy and will collaborate with multiple departments within Students for Life, without direct supervisor responsibilities.
Physical Demands
- Must have the ability to operate technical equipment such as a computer and sit for extended periods of time.
Travel
- Travel to bi-annual team trainings in January and July as required
- Able to assist at events at various locations as needed
Work Authorization
- Must be able to successfully complete an I-9. The I-9 is used for verifying the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the United States.
